If you believe in ghosts and the paranormal, then you are living in the right state. West Virginia is known for being one of the most haunted places in America, and the most haunted structure in West Virginia is the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston.

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was under construction over a period of time between 1858 and 1881. The facility, designed to house only 250 patients, was opened to patients in 1864. It is one of largest hand cut stone masonry buildings in the world, second only to the Kremlin.

In the 1950s, the building held 2,400 patients. It was overcrowded and conditions for the patients were poor. Worse yet, a visiting doctor performed hundreds of lobotomies there. The hospital closed it doors permanently in 1994.

Some of the general reports in the hospital is apparitions of nurses, doctors and patients roaming the halls. There have also been reports of disembodied voices, footsteps and other unusual noises, like banging and clanging.

One of the most notable spirits is that of a little girl named Lily, who purportedly died of pneumonia inside the facility at age nine. There is a room in the facility dedicated to her memory and she often interacts with the toys left there. Sometimes she will follow visitors around the facility. She in one of many child spirits that roam Trans-Allegheny's halls, but the only one with a name.

The civil war section of the facility is haunted by far less innocent spirits. Witnesses have reported hearing cries and moans of pain, assumably from injured soldiers. There are the heavy footfalls of soldier's boots, misty apparitions and shadow forms.

In the upper floors, more malevolent spirits roam. One, named Slewfoot, is apparently a vicious killer, while another, who is unnamed, roams the seclusion cells.
These are one of several areas where heavy activity apparently occurs. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the reports of unexplainable noise and visual activity has not abated. Whatever is going on in that facility, it falls far outside the realm of normal.
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, located at 71 Asylum Drive in Weston, is open for ghost tours and history tours.
