Niche users recently weighed in on the best county in West Virginia, and Monongalia County stole the show! Now, we’ll be the first to acknowledge that there are many amazing counties in West Virginia, but we do have to admit that Mon County is a great one!
Monongalia County, affectionately known as Mon County by locals, is the fourth-most populated county in West Virginia, with the county seat being in Morgantown. It is named for the Monongahela River that cuts through this part of West Virginia: the "-ia" ending means "land of" in Latin. It is located in the north-central portion of the state.
And apparently, it's a great place to live. Voted #1 as both "Best County To Live In" and "Best County For Families" and #2 for "Best Public Schools," Mon County is known for friendliness, options, and low crime rates.
This may be partly because sports are a big deal to many in Mon County, and West Virginia University definitely provides plenty of options for sports fans!
Another opportunity here for those who love sports is the Monongalia County Ballpark in Granville, a popular local hangout and a great place to watch a game.
As for natural wonders, Monongalia has those as well, including the beloved Coopers Rock State Forest, which offers enchanting hiking trails through thick forests and along rock cliff overlooks.
And we know there are a host of other great spots in Mon County that we don’t have time to mention: Cheat Lake, several Wildlife Management Areas, and a host of friendly small towns, and some delicious restaurants and fun small businesses. Those of you who know and love the area, what’s your favorite thing about this top-ranked county? Let us know in the comments!
Want to know another thing that makes Monongalia County so great? The Mon River Trail System, which also won a top award this year!
