If there’s is one single thing that binds West Virginians, it’s our pride in our heritage. The history of the Mountain State is wide and storied and tells a rich tale of generations passed. From this tale we can get a sense of not only where we’ve been, but also where we stand. Fortunately, many historic buildings have been saved and/or restored from that bygone era, and the Lost River General Store is one that is worthy of a visit.
This two-story general store is a testament to the life and times of the Mountain State oh-so long ago.
It was built 120 years ago, in 1898, and known as the Lost River Store House for years. Until 1979, it was also home to the Lost River Post Office, even though Lost River is not an official town.
Today, the Lost River General Store preserves much of the past of this old building. Once inside, you can get a sense of how it was once the heartbeat of the community. Now, tourists and locals will head over to grab a bite to eat on the weekends and browse the store's eclectic inventory.
This old Victorian building has two floors of goodies to peruse. They have everything from locally-made preserves and canned everything, to an array of keepsakes to remind you of your visit, and gifts for loved ones.
After your huge BBQ sandwich, be sure to head upstairs to check out even more goodies! The owners (who also operate the lovely B&B next door) rotate the inventory regularly, so each trip you'll find new things to explore (and buy).
Oh, and one more thing... after all is said and done, don't miss the fanciest outhouse in the state. It was built by the CCC when they were working in the area in the 1930s.
The very next time you're planning to get out of the house and explore the back roads of West Virginia, head to Lost River General Store — and be sure to come hungry!
Lost River General Store is located at 6993 State Road 259, Lost City, WV 26810. It’s open Friday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m .to 5:00 p.m. Learn more on the official website for the store and the adjacent inn here.
