The New River Gorge Bridge is hard to miss. It’s one of the longest single-span arch bridges in the world. You’ve most likely seen it…probably more than once. But have you seen it from the overlook on Long Point Trail? Because it’s one of the best views of the bridge (and the surrounding mountains) you can get.
Long Point Trail is a 3-mile out-and-back hike located in beautiful Fayette County, West Virginia.
The trailhead is right off County Road 9-8, about five minutes from the town of Fayetteville.
It's well worth your time to head out that way: locals and tourists alike agree that the overlook at the end of the trail offers one of the best views in West Virginia!
The trail is well-maintained and generally rated as easy, but there is a short portion of steep downhill at the end to reach Long Point that's a more moderate hike.
On the way to the overlook, the path passes through beautiful forest and a dense rhododendron thicket before opening up into a panoramic view of mountains, river, gorge, and bridge.
The trail is well marked, and there are plenty of other beautiful options nearby if you want to add some length to your hike, including the Kaymoor area.
Do keep an eye out for snakes, including copperheads, but don't let them discourage you from making the journey all the way to the rock outcrop. You'll be so glad you did!
