There is no shortage of beautiful views to be had in West Virginia. It wouldn’t be “Almost Heaven” otherwise! What’s a little harder to come by is a pretty view that’s easy to access but not overrun with people. Enter this little known overlook in Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park near Hillsboro, West Virginia.
No, it's not the overlook that Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is most famous for - the Droop Mountain Tower. That's a pretty one as well, but it's not little-known!
This easy loop trail in Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park leads to a wooden platform that's the perfect perch to see wild, wonderful West Virginia at almost any time of year.
And at just half a mile in length, the loop trail provides a pleasant, easy stroll through a beautiful forest with a huge payoff once you reach the overlook. Plus, since it isn't well known, you'll often have this trail (and this view) all to yourself.
As the name suggests, the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park area is also full of history, particularly Civil War era history, and you'll be able to spot a bit of that in the woods around this short trail as well. Interestingly, there are also several small caves and an old bear den along the trail in addition to the Civil War trenches, so hikers will have plenty to look for all along the way to and from the overlook platform.
The best way to learn more about the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park Overlook Trail to a little-known but beautiful West Virginia view is to visit AllTrails. You can also find information on the WV State Parks website. And, as noted at the beginning of the article, there are plenty of other great views to be had around the Mountain State once you’ve seen this one!
