Camping is a popular activity in the state, but generally, the transportation and the camp site are two separate things. But not with this trip: the train you take to the campsite becomes your lodge once you arrive.
The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad offers train rides on authentic steam engines as a a way for modern West Virginians to experience a historical train ride.
After the Civil War, the train industry boomed, and a faster mode of transportation became the norm. It was the next great step for heavy industry. The train rides offered by the company hearkens back to the time.
Among the many train packages you can choose from, The castaway caboose is arguably the most unique.
The trip begins from two different locations, one from Durbin Depot and the other from Cass Depot. Both offer the same package, regardless of your departure location.
From there, the train throws hot, puffing clouds of steam as it slowly moves forward, gradually picking up speed as it goes.

Before long, the train is chugging along, offering a scenic ride through the hills and mountains of West Virginia. You will pass wide green fields and thick woods that line the landscape and the hills along the way.
Once you arrive at your destination, the caboose is disconnected and the rest of the train moves on, leaving you in your own personal lodge along the river.
Inside the caboose, which can house four adults, are all the amenities of a lodge, cabin or hotel room: It has a refrigerator, a stove, heat, linens, towels, utensils, a DVD player, full-size shower, a bathroom, paper towels, pots and pans, coffee, tea, dining room with a table and chairs, and full bed sets, including pillows, blankets and linens.
Once out in nature, expect to see the local wildlife. The area is intended to be as remote as is possible along an active train route. Lucliky, the only active train will be the one coming to pick you up. You can choose to stay for one, two or even three nights.
Although you might have many comforts of home, one thing you will not have is cell phone service. Be sure to leave any pets or alcocol at home, as neither is permitted.
So, if you are looking for a new way to go camping, this just might be exactly what you are looking for.
