Some restaurants began life in a different time, under a different name. Most of these restaurants, if they remain restaurants, get a modern face lift, and all traces of their former life disappear. But there is one restaurant in Huntington that will not erase its past.
21 at the Frederick can be found inside the historic Fredrick hotel, on the first floor.
The moment you step inside the building, you are transported back in time to 1906, the year the Frederick first opened its doors. It no longer functions as a hotel, but it still houses both office space and apartments in its former hotel rooms and suites.
Just to the left of the entrance hallway you will find the 21 Club. Though you will see a "Members
Only" sign, don't worry. That is just a historical throwback to the space that was originally The Elephant Walk Club, a private club. 21 at the Fredrick is open to the public.
Inside you will see the original decor, unchanged from its turn of the century design. Note the walking elephants above the booth along the back wall, a remnant of The Elephant Walk Club. The tables and chairs were chosen to match its environs to create an unmistakable feeling of dining in another time.
In keeping with that tradition, the restaurants serves classic foods, such as filet mignon, eggplant parmesan and lobster tail. Each entree comes with two sides of your choice. The seasonal risotto and 21 Roasted Potatoes are especially good.
The restaurant also serves an extensive wine list, so finding a wine to pair with your meal should be no problem at all.
Before you leave, take a while to walk the lobby area, which is essentially serves as a museum of the hotel and Huntington in general. Don't forget to bring your camera, either. This is the kind of place that begs to be photographed.
21 at the Frederick is located at 940 4th Avenue in Huntington. It is only open for dinner.
