Peanut butter and jelly. Tom and Jerry. Rain and a tin roof. What do all these things have in common? They are epic combinations. Here’s another: history buffs and ghost hunters.
If you're a ghost hunter, where do you go to find the best orbs? To a site rich in tragic history, of course.
And if you're a historian, where do you go to spend an interesting day in the field? To the exact same place: a site rich in tragic history.
Ghost Hunter, meet History Buff. Both of you are going to find so much to love in West Virginia, especially at the state's haunted Civil War battlefield known as Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park.
The battle here at Droop Mountain was one of the most significant Civil War battles to take place in West Virginia. The Union army, led by General William Averell, defeated the Confederate army, led by Brigadier General John Echols on November 6, 1863.
This was well before the war ended, but it was a decisive victory that effectively ended the Confederacy's attempts to take control of West Virginia, solidifying the Mountain State as a key holding of the Union. But such a victory was not easily won. It required one of the state's largest battles, and much blood was shed (reports indicate over 400 casualties).
Rumors are, some of the soldiers who lost their lives here still inhabit the area -- in addition to enjoying beautiful views from the Droop Mountain Tower, modern visitors have reported odd sounds, like that of galloping horses. They've smelled gunpowder. They've seen a headless Confederate soldier roaming the grounds, as well as a second soldier sleeping against an old tree.
And these sights, sounds, and smells weren't associated with the various historical reenactments the park hosts throughout the year, either.
Historians and paranormal investigators interested in learning more about this unique Civil War battlefield in West Virginia should visit the West Virginia State Parks website . To really make the most of a stop here, spend some time in nearby Hillsboro, West Virginia as well.
