There's So Much To See Along The Greenbrier River Trail In West Virginia

Love to hike or bike? If so, then this one-of-a-kind trail in West Virginia is sure to get your blood flowing in advance of your next adventure. The Greenbrier River Trail follows the Greenbrier River for 78 miles through the state, and is technically a linear state park. This unusual state park is an old rail line converted to trail with stunning sights along the entire route.

The trail runs from North Caldwell to Cass and has 14 convenient trailheads from which to enter.

It follows the river and is, for the most part, a flat adventure. But don't think that because it's easy it's also boring. It's anything but boring...

The trail crosses 35 trestles — some leftover from the days when this route was used by trains.

And bounds courageously through two of the old tunnels used by the railroad.

And neither one of them are what you'd call ordinary-looking tunnels!

If you're an avid hiker, you could likely get through all 78 miles in a weekend, stopping at campsites along the way. The route has 16 primitive campsites and three shared camp shelters. More than 60 picnic tables are located trail side if you just want to hike out for a bit, have a bite to eat and return.

A few short years ago, Backpacker Magazine dubbed this one-of-a-kind trail as "one of the Top 10 hiking trails in the United States." It's easy to see why!

Ready to hit the trail this year?? The trailhead for the North Caldwell southernmost entry point is located 1.3 miles north of US 60 on Stone House Road. The north end of the trail begins at Slabtown, 0.5 miles south of Cass on WV 66 at Deer Creek Road.
