When it comes to free admission, we certainly are spoiled here in West Virginia! With dozens of state parks and museums that open their doors (or gates) free of charge, there’s always something to do even if you don’t have any extra change jingling in your pocket. And one of those excellent options is the West Virginia Botanic Garden.
The West Virginia Botanic Garden in Morgantown is an 85-acre slice of paradise hidden away in one of West Virginia's busiest cities. Located on the grounds of Tibbs Run Preserve which also features Tibbs Run Reservoir, this botanic garden boasts seven trails and a wetland boardwalk that allow you to explore the entire acreage at your leisure.
Several of the trails are ADA-accessible, as are the restroom facilities.
The West Virginia Botanic Garden is open to the public free of charge every day of the year from dawn until dusk. Donations are appreciated to help fund the upkeep and expansion of the gardens, and paid memberships are available that offer special discounts at various vendors and events as well as reciprocal admission into over 300 other botanical gardens around the country.
The West Virginia Botanic Garden has something to offer in every season, from beautiful floral landscaping in the spring and summer to vibrant leaf colors in the fall and artistic statues and snowscapes in the winter.
There's no wrong time to plan a day trip to this beautiful destination featuring nature at its finest!
Pets are welcome, but must remain leashed at all times. Another thing you might want to know before you go: the garden borders a shooting range, so while you are perfectly safe strolling the grounds here, you may hear the sound of gunfire in the distance.
While you're exploring the botanic garden, be sure not to miss the butterfly garden! It's the best butterfly garden in West Virginia, and butterflies actively visit this garden, which is located adjacent to the lower parking lot of the West Virginia Botanic Garden, from spring to fall.
Also consider the West Virginia Botanic Garden next time you have a party to plan or an event to host! The garden's Event and Education Center can accommodate a variety of needs.
Have you strolled the grounds of the West Virginia Botanic Garden before? Which trail is your favorite?
