While we all love the thought of being able to tackle a 10 or 15-mile hike each and every weekend, it’s just not always possible. So, the next time you’re short on time (or will power) head to this relatively short hike in West Virginia that climaxes at the top of a hill with a fantastic surprise awaiting at the end of the trail.

The moderately trafficked trail begins at the far end of a parking lot (directions are below) just off U.S. 33 so close to the Virginia border you could probably throw a rock and have it land on the turf of our neighboring state.

The trail is a mere 2.7 miles out and back (so, 1.35 miles each way) and oddly enough, when you first begin the trek, you'll go down before you go up. Much of the trail meanders through the picturesque George Washington National Forest.

It's a hike that's probably just right for all ages. The only time things may get a little sketch is in the last quarter mile, when you'll encounter a relatively steep incline. But stick with it... aside from great views, there is a huge surprise at the top of that hill you'll be climbing.

This High Knob Tower trail is best used in months that don't have snow. Bring the dog (on a leash), the kids, your grandparents. It's perfect for just about everyone.
