Have you heard of the small town of Falling Waters, West Virginia, located along the Potomac River in Berkeley County? And do you know the fascinating story of the scenic, historic waterfall for which the community is named?
Located alongside a country road in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, this beautiful cascade draped on both sides with emerald moss and grass makes a peaceful pastoral scene.
However, on July 2, 1861, there was nothing reminiscent of peace here. The noise of Union Troops under General Robert Patterson could be heard passing by after they crossed the Potomac from Maryland several hundred yards from this waterfall.
A young confederate colonel was tasked with meeting this force to assess its strength; this would be the first engagement of the colonel who was soon to become known as "Stonewall" Jackson.
This battle would become known by the name of this waterfall - the Battle of Falling Waters.
Two years and two weeks later the peace would again be shattered in the middle of the night as most of General Robert E. Lee’s forces passed this waterfall after being trapped on the opposite bank of the Potomac. When President Lincoln heard the Confederates had escaped, he reportedly said "We had them within our grasp."
This historic waterfall is simple to access and is only minutes from Interstate 81. There are historical signs and descriptions here as well as at nearby locations related to the battles fought in the Civil War.
Falling Waters waterfall is around 15 feet high. While the trail to the base of the falls is short, it is quite steep, so you may want to plan your visit to avoid wet or icy conditions.
To reach the parking area from Interstate 81, take the Spring Mills Exit (Exit 20) to West Virginia State Route 901 East. Turn left on U.S. Route 11 North, then right on Encampment Road. Watch for and park at a historical marker to your left. The waterfall is just steps down the dirt path from the parking area.
This incredible waterfall drenched in beauty and history will be worth every minute you spend here!
