West Virginia has a lot of great people, but did you know about these 4 truly evil people who also lived in the Mountain State? These murder stories may make your skin crawl!
1. Harry Powers, AKA Cornelius O. Pierson and A. R. Weaver.
Powers, who was born Herman Drenth in the Netherlands in 1892, was a convicted serial killer. He constructed a garage at his home in Quiet Dell, W.Va. and used it as the scene of his murders. He lured his victims through "Lonely Hearts" ads, which claimed he was looking for love. He was convicted of the deaths of two women and three children. When he was arrested, a crowd of people surrounded the county jail where he was being held and demanded he be given to them so they could lynch him. The Clarksburg Fire Department used tear gas to disperse the crowd. He was later executed by hanging at the Moundsville State Penitentiary.
2. Bobby Joe Long, AKA Bobbie Joe Long, Robert Joe Long and Robert Joseph Long.
Born in Kenova, W.Va., Long is a serial killer who abducted, sexually assaulted and murdered at least 10 women in the Tampa Bay area in 1984. Prior to the murders, he also raped several women whom he found through newspaper ads. He is currently on death row in Florida.
3. Charles Manson
Manson, the infamous cult leader convicted of conspiracy to commit the murders of 7 people, lived in McMechen, W.Va. with an aunt and uncle while his mother served time in prison.
4. Elmer Brunner
Brunner was convicted of the 1957 death of Ruby Miller, who was killed with the claw-end of a hammer. He was later executed by electric chair at the Moundsville State Penitentiary. He was the last person in West Virginia to be given the death penalty. The state abolished the sentence in 1965.
