They don’t call West Virginia the “Mountain State” for nothing. Our state is situated squarely in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. It’s hard to go anywhere in West Virginia without seeing beautiful mountain views. However, some views are better than others. If you’re looking to experience the best mountain views, here are some suggestions for places to go:
13 miles east of Morgantown and 8 miles west of Bruceton Mills is Coopers Rock State Park, which offers beautiful views of the forest. This was was taken at the forest’s famous overlook.

Famous for its bridge, the New River Gorge has many hiking trails with great views of the mountains surrounding the river.

Dolly Sods in Grant, Randolph, and Tucker counties has great views of the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia.
Spruce Mountain’s highest point, Spruce Knob is 4,863 feet tall and is the highest point in West Virginia and in the Allegheny Mountains. It offers beautiful views of the German Valley and North Fork Mountain. The mountain is part of the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area in the Monongahela National Forest.

This crag in Pendleton County is a sight to behold. It's the only "true peak" -- inaccessible except by technical rock climbing techniques -- on the East Coast.

Gaudineer Knob is the peak of Shavers Mountain in eastern Randolph County. The mountain is about 35 miles long from north to south and several parts of it are higher than 4,000 feet.
Also called Laurel Hill, this mountain runs through Preston, Tucker, Barbour, and Randolph counties and is considered the considered to be the westernmost ridge of the Allegheny Mountains.
Raven Rocks on the Appalachian Trail is located in Jefferson County. Its peak is north of Jefferson County's border with Clarke County, Virginia and west of its border with Loudoun County, Virginia. Its highest point is 1,454 feet.
Cheat Mountain in Pocahontas County is a high, rugged mountain in the Allegheny Mountains. Its highest point is Thorny Flat, which has an elevation of 4,848 feet. Thorny Flat is also home to Snowshoe Mountain, a popular ski resort.
