Sometimes, there is more in the darkness of the woods than fallen leaves and local wildlife. In a place like West Virginia, its not uncommon for creepier inhabitants to reside in such places; ones that give rise to local legend.

Darkish Knob is a steep mountain just beyond the small town of Parsons in Tucker County.

It is known for its loose, rocky terrain that makes traversing the mountain dangerous. Not that many people would want to brave the woods of this mountain in the first place, especially at night. Local legend states that Darkish Knob has been haunted since before the Civil War.

At that time, slavery had not yet been outlawed and Darkish Knob was a stop along the Underground Railroad - a network of secret paths throughout the south that were laid out to led slaves to freedom in the north.

Along these paths were hidden safe houses that served as coordinated stops along the railroad where slaves could rest during the day before continuing their flight to freedom under the cover of darkness. Places like the secluded woods in the mountains of Virginia (WV did not exist yet) worked well for that purpose.
Unfortunately, traversing the slope of Darkish Knob at night could prove treacherous, as it did for one young slave.

The safe house there was so well hidden that one slave girl, who was being pursued by slave catchers, could not find it in the darkness. Eventually, she reached the top of the hill and turned to see if she was still being pursued, as she did this, her horse lost its footing and tumbled down the side of the hill. The girl's scream was so loud as she fell, it apparently could be heard from a mile away. She did not survive the fall.
Local legend says that this girl returns to the top of the hill every year on the anniversary of her death. She cries and moans for several minutes, before releasing a bone-chilling scream as she once again plunges to the valley below. Witnesses have reported the sounds of screams and other strange phenomena, such as unexplained lights on the hill.

Whether or not you believe this legend, there in no denying that West Virginia is known for its paranormal phenomenon, and that this spot deep in the woods is one place you do not want to go at night.
