Summer’s the perfect time to head to the mountains for a swim! We’ve found that the increased elevation (and the extra shade) often keeps things significantly cooler than in the valley towns. And if you need a new swimming hole, consider giving Shupe’s Chute in Holly River State Park a try.
Holly River State Park is a beautiful recreational area in Webster County, West Virginia.
It's the second-largest state park in the state, with over 8,000 acres of land and over 40 miles of trails. There are even a handful of cabins at which you can spend the night!
And waterfalls...Holly River State Park has lots of waterfalls.
The area is known for the multiple cascades that plummet their way down the mountain. Some of the better-known of these cascades at Holly River State Park include Upper Falls and Tecumseh Falls.
But in addition to those popular beauties, there's the lesser-known Shupe's Chute.
It's notable compared to the other falls in Holly River State Park for several reasons...
...including the cool, serene swimming hole at its base!
There's not much better than jumping into the creek to cool down after a mountain hike.
The chute itself is also worth a look: the boulders are formed in just such a way so that the water is herded into a rushing tunnel into the pool below.
Even though waterfalls are common in our state (there are hundreds in West Virginia), you don't see one like this every day!
So plan a trip to Holly River State Park and hike to Shupe's Chute for a cool, refreshing swim.
As always in West Virginia, state park admission is free!
