West Virginia is a beautiful place, but it’s made even more interesting and charming by several things that don’t get the attention they deserve.
1. Fog
From Grandview (pictured) to the New River Gorge Bridge to Dolly Sods to millions of places in between, when the morning fog rushes in to fill the valleys and outline their contours...it takes our breath away.
2. Fossils
Have you ever noticed any of the little fossils that fill our creeks? If not, you should start watching for them, because they are so cool.
3. Boulders
The rock formations don't get nearly enough attention around here. We all know them and love them, we just don't talk about them much. But from cliffs to tumbled boulders to tiny crystals, and from Beartown State Park (pictured) to the Endless Wall to hundreds of other places around the state, we love our rock formations!
4. Barns
Huge, old, beautiful barns are tucked away in fields and up hollers all around the state, standing in silent tribute to a time when homesteading was a way of life for all in Appalachia.
5. Bridges
We all talk about the New River Gorge Bridge, but there are so many other West Virginia bridges we love as well, including the Market Street Bridge (pictured), our covered bridges, our railroad bridges, and more. It's what we get in a state so full of rivers!
6. Butterflies
There are so many beautiful butterflies that flutter through our yards, woods, and riverbanks! Did you know that a grouping of butterflies is a kaleidoscope? And if you've lived here for any length of time, you've definitely seen one!
7. The Moon
We have some of the best night skies in the nation, and that includes frequent glimpses of the big, beautiful moon, especially when it rises full and pink on the horizon.
What are some other things you love about living here but don’t hear people bragging about as much as you might expect? How about our absolute favorite thing of all: THE PEOPLE .
