No matter the time of year, a weekend stay-cation in the Mountain State is a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Mini vacations are sometimes better than those that have you driving for a full day just to reach your destination. Besides, there are so many beautiful places to visit and enjoy in West Virginia, why leave (even for a vacation)?! The following hidden destination is perfect for a weekend getaway. Take a look…
Perhaps it is the far-reaching location (in the Eastern Panhandle) that makes Cacapon Resort State Park one of the most underrated parks in the state, but there is so much to do here (in every season!) that you'll want to get it on your radar and keep it there until you manage to visit.
The park features a picturesque, large lake. In the warmer seasons, swimming in the lake is a fantastic way to cool off as you enjoy the spoils of its sandy beach. And in other seasons, enjoy the water topside in one of the kayak, canoe or paddle boats. The views of the surrounding landscape are peaceful and serene.
With the Cacapon Mountain as a backdrop, the fall season lights up the landscape with brilliant red, yellow and gold tones, making autumn a lovely season to spend time in this little known state park.
There are 23 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate and difficult. Find one that suits your preference and then get out and enjoy this huge park on foot.
Or, take a guided horseback ride. Cacapon State Park offers guided horseback rides for guests (age limitations may apply). Not many WV state parks offer horseback riding on site!
At the end of your relaxing (yet, busy) days, head back to your home away from home for a peaceful night's sleep. Accommodations at this state park include cabins, a lodge, a full house rental (which used to be the old lodge), and a campground.
The perfect stay-cation awaits at this gorgeous state park in West Virginia. Have you visited Cacapon Resort State Park yet? We'd love to know!
