West Virginians are proud people, and for good reasons. We’re not braggarts, but still we have a lot of things we could brag about. Here are only a few of those things:
1. We’ve got some of the best mountain climbing. Seneca Rocks is the only “true peak” -- inaccessible except by technical rock climbing techniques -- in the Eastern United States.
2. We produce energy. West Virginia has a long history of coal production. As of 2011, it was the second largest producer of coal in the country, behind only Wyoming.
3. One of our pilots, Chuck Yeager, was the first to break the sound barrier.
4. We're the home of Tudor's Biscuits.
5. You can't get breathtaking views like this anywhere else but West Virginia.
6. We’ve got some of the best skiing terrain in the east.
7. West Virginia is home to the Gauley River, one of the most popular advanced whitewater runs in the Eastern United States.
8. We started Mother’s Day — and Father’s Day and Grandparents' Day
9. West Virginia’s New River Gorge Bridge was for many years the world’s longest single-span arch bridge; now it’s the third longest. It is one of the world’s highest vehicular bridges.
10. We were the only state to be created after seceding from a Confederate state during the Civil War.
11. We invented pepperoni rolls.
12. We share a home state with basketball great Jerry West, born in Chelyan.
13. Gold-medal gymnast Mary Lou Retton was born here, in Fairmont.
