The art of the written word saw no greater prominence when the printing press was invented. It is the first form of mass media, the way the dissemination of knowledge was communicated for about five centuries, before the invention of film, and later, television and the internet. And the medium is still going strong, as this festival in Charleston demonstrates.
The West Virginia Book Festival is an annual event at the Charleston Civic Center for all bibliophiles, featuring author panels, signings, workshops and vendors.
New and used books will be available for purchase. Several vendors and authors will be selling their works, or you can browse through a large selection of used books, lined up in long rows of tables separated by genre.
Word Play is the festival's name for children's activities. Activities include a children's storybook costume parade, among other activities. There will also be plenty of children's books to read.
Friday will include several workshops on general writing, revising, building suspense, aspects of story building and writing children's books.
Every year, the event hosts author panels and book signings. 2018 will welcome several authors, including Dennis Lehane, Debbie Macomber, Jill Lepore, John Scalzi, David Grann and Kwame Alexander.
Gaiman has received 34 literary awards in his career, including six Hugo Awards, two Nebula Awards, the Bram Stoker Award for best novel and the Eisner Award for best writer.
