Dedicated waterfall chasers may think they’ve seen all of the waterfalls that West Virginia has to offer but with over 200 of these gems hiding throughout the state, there are probably at least a few you haven’t visited yet. Twin Falls Resort State Park is home to not one but two pretty little waterfalls. Many who have gone in search of them come back empty-handed claiming there were no waterfalls to be seen. Others take the hike and return with stunning photographs of both Marsh Fork Falls and Black Fork Falls. Are these natural wonders playing hide-and-go-seek? Read on to discover what makes this particular set of waterfalls so elusive.
Twin Falls Resort State Park is located on a wooded ridge in the mountains of Wyoming County. This gem in southern West Virginia offers 25 miles of hiking trails, a championship golf course, restored Pioneer Farm, and plenty of options for an overnight stay.
The park was named for its two waterfalls found on the property. Marsh Fork Falls and Black Fork Falls are nestled off of a 1.25-mile loop trail in the heart of the park.
The Falls Trail is a paved path traversing the rolling landscape to Marsh Fork Falls. Sounds easy enough, so why do so many visitors miss this stunning cascade?
Timing is key. During the warmer months or times of little rain, the waterfall dries up to a mere trickle making it hard to spot. If you want to see either waterfall in its glory, you need to time your visit right.
Just as with Marsh Fork Falls, Black Fork Falls can almost disappear during the drier months making it difficult to see. But if you wait until after a substantial rain or visit during the spring thaw, both waterfalls are well worth seeking out.
