The fall colors of West Virginia are great from many angles, but the best is from above. Only from the state’s highest peaks do we really get a bird’s-eye view of the foliage, and only from there do we really get a full appreciation of its scope.
Blackwater Falls State Park may be known for its falls, but you definitely want to stay for its views. Lindy Point offers one of the greatest views of the surrounding landscape. From several thousand feet in the air, you can see the head of Blackwater Canyon laid out before you, just like a bird.
From West Virginia's only true peak you will get another great view of the land below. It is a bit of a hike to reach its summit, but one you do, you will realize it was definitely worth it. You can view the sights from the overlook deck or ascend into the rocks themselves for an even better view.

Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia, so there really is no better place to see what the fall colors look like from above. The only way to get higher is from a hang glider, air balloon, or if you are really adventurous, a parachute.

If you go to the Dolly Sods Wilderness in Monongahela National Forest, anywhere you go will give you a great view. It is on top of a mountain and the colors there are among the brightest in the state. This photo is not photoshopped; this is really what fall is like at Dolly Sods.
Any view of, or from , the New River Gorge Bridge is bound to be pretty spectacular. The new river runs along the bottom of the gorge, sparkling in the sun like an artery of shimmering light. There are many places to view the bridge, and you can even take the bridge walk, which is a hidden walkway underneath the roadway itself, available though regular tours.
Only from the overlook at Cooper's Rock can you get a view like this. From there, you can see the landscape of Northern West Virginia laid out before you, it hills trailing off into the distance.
This accurately named state park will definitely give you a grand view of the New River valley as it loops around a long ridge, whose end disappears into the horizon. Very easy to access, this grand view is the first thing you encounter as you exit the parking lot down a short paved walkway.
