Hiking just might be the perfect outdoor activity. After all, we can get outside, breathe in the fresh air, and explore all corners of West Virginia any time of the year. We can be newbies, still getting our footing as hikers, or have been hiking for years. If you’re on the hunt for a fun hike with plenty of surprises, make your way along the Alum Creek and Cave Trail in West Virginia.
Nestled in Audra State Park, in Buckhannon, the Alum Creek and Cave Trail promises plenty of beautiful scenery, and it can be quite a challenge.
Definitely wear comfortable, sturdy hiking boots or shoes, because you’ll have to hike along some rocky terrain. Keep an eye out, too, for tight spots, fallen trees branches, and some slippery areas after it has rained.
The picturesque trail runs alongside the flowing Middle Fork River for part of the hike, offering beautiful views. (Don’t forget your camera or smartphone, so you can snap photos and selfies.)
One of the highlights of the trail, and you’ll likely agree, comes when you arrive at the cave. There, you’ll start strolling along a wooden boardwalk.
If you don’t like heights, take a deep breathe because the view from the boardwalk will take your breath away. Look down at the gushing Middle Fork River. (It’s also the perfect opportunity for snapping photos.)
While you’ll find the trail is well-marked, making it easy for you to follow, you may find the hike easy or difficult depending on your skillset. Just keep that in mind before you set off.
