Hiking in the Mountain State brings a variety of amazing adventures, no matter the region you’re exploring. Whether exploring the rim of the New River Gorge or dropping hundreds of feet down into an abandoned mining town, there is always something amazing at which to gawk when you’re hiking in the most beautiful state in America.
Nature is at its finest in West Virginia when you can put your boots on the ground and get out and explore. One of our must underrated state parks (Audra State Park) has a gorgeous river (Middle Fork River) that flows right through the park. On any day, it's a sight to behold and there is one trail with the best view ever — if you have the stomach for it...
The Alum Creek and Cave Trail at Audra State Park is a 2.7 mile loop trek around the outer perimeter of one side of the park. For nearly half of the hike it follows alongside the babbling sounds of the Middle Fork River.
It starts out easy, but we don't want to mislead you: it does have a few tight spots and some rocks you'll need to climb over. And at any given time, you could encounter a recently fallen tree you'll need to navigate over (or under). But all of that may be a drop in the bucket if you're not so comfortable with heights.
Audra State Park doles out hours (even days) of endless family-oriented fun. From waterfall swimming to camping, picnicking, and more, this park seems to have it all — even a thrilling trail with daring views!
Audra State Park is located at 8397 Audra Park Rd., Buckhannon, WV, 26201, approximately 25 miles south of Buckhannon. Learn more on the official website of West Virginia State Parks.
