West Virginia has no shortage of hiking trails – there are trails in just about every variety that you could conceive. We also have an abundance of sites that celebrate our railroad heritage. But we have very few trails that are both. The North Bend Rail Trail is one such attraction.

The North Bend Rail Trail is a 72-mile path spanning western and north-central West Virginia. However, it does not have just a single train tunnel - it actually has 10 of them.

The trail was originally a railroad line built by the Northwestern Virginia Railroad before the Civil War. Later, it became part of the B&O Railroad, among others. In the '80s, CSX sold the line to the state of West Virginia, who renovated the line into a hiking, biking and equestrian trail.

Its path leads through a large assortment of abandoned tunnels along its 72 mile span. Some are obviously much older than others, having been formed by different methods over the course of roughly a century.

Most popular among the many tunnels is the apparently haunted Silver Run Tunnel, which is 2,297 long. The tunnel is purportedly haunted by a woman with black hair and pale skin.

The trail runs parallel to U.S. Route 50 and can be accessed at several points along the way. Nearby locations include Clarksburg, Parkersburg and North Bend State Park.
