In the summer of 1908, in the nearby town of Monongah, there was a coal mining disaster that claimed 361 mens' lives. One of the daughters of a coal miner was thinking heavily about her father and decided that there should be a day that fathers should be remembered and honored. This is the site of the very church that Father's day was first celebrated.

St. John's Chapel is the oldest Catholic church in the state that is still used. This quaint little chapel was built in the late 1850s and then was restored in the early 1980s.
