Washington has natural beauty everywhere, but you can find some fascinating man made things around the state as well. We have unique bridges, iconic landmarks, and one-of-kind structures that add to all of our stunning Northwest surroundings. Here are 12 you’ve got to see in person:
1. Roche Harbor Mausoleum (Afterglow Vista), Friday Harbor
This mausoleum marks the burial site of John McMillin and his family. McMillin was an important figure who helped bring Roche Harbor to life, and he wanted the memory of his family to live on forever, so he carefully constructed this site for him and his relatives. After entering the gates, you'll come across three flights of symbolic steps. In the middle there's a dining room table, which is made of limestone. Around the table sits chairs, one for each family member with corresponding names on the back. This site was chosen in particular because when the sun goes down, light shines through the trees and beautifully illuminates the tomb.
