Washington is an interesting place. One minute we’re cursing the scorching sun and searching for ways to beat the heat, and the next we’re bundling up and longing for the days of summer. Luckily, all four of our seasons tend to be mild enough that we can almost always enjoy the great outdoors, at least in some capacity. And we can honestly say there’s never a bad time to head to Lake Crescent.

Located in the northern foothills of the Olympic Mountains about 18 miles from Port Angeles, Lake Crescent is a true treasure.

While this is a popular place for locals and tourists alike, especially in the summer, it never feels too busy to enjoy—probably because the area is massive.
In the summer, people love to visit the lake for kayaking, canoeing, or catch and release fishing.

Boat launches are located at both east and west ends of the lake, and you can rent a rowboat from Lake Crescent Lodge.
The Devil's Punchbowl is a popular place to beat the heat in the summer.

Lake Crescent was isolated by a massive landslide around 7,000 years ago , resulting in the cultivation of the Beardslee trout.

In the summer of 1940, the body of Hallie Latham Illingworth was found floating in the lake. Although her face was unrecognizable, her body had not decomposed. In a bizarre chemical transformation, the flesh had turned into a soap-like substance that could be scooped away like putty. Hallie, a victim of domestic violence from her womanizing husband, became known as the Lady of the Lake.
Despite its rather macabre story, Lake Crescent is a tranquil and relaxing place.
