The lazy days of summer are upon us, and thoughts turn to finding ways to beat the heat. I know the perception of the Evergreen State is that it rains all the time, and I do mean all the time. That said, perhaps I shouldn’t share our little secret, but the truth is Washington has some pretty spectacular summers.
So what do we do when the temperatures rise? We go outdoors and explore the natural beauty of the state we’re fortunate to call home. And if it’s really warm, we seek out a local beach, river, or swimming hole for a refreshing dip. Fortunately, there are plenty of options, but if you’re looking for a stellar summer adventure, we know the perfect place. There is a hidden swimming hole in Washington with aqua-blue water and views so picturesque you’ll swear you just stepped into another world. Come with us as we explore Lake Serene, a scenic alpine lake in the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains.
Situated in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Lake Serene is known for its turquoise waters and striking alpine scenery.
It's always a good idea to plan ahead for various weather conditions and pack accordingly. Protect yourself from the sun with our favorite easy-to-pack sunscreen.

Considered a moderately difficult route, the Lake Serene Trail is a 9.1-mile out-and-back hike through a lush forest of towering firs and leafy vegetation. Access the trailhead at Mount Index Road near Stevens Pass. Getting an early start is recommended as this is a popular trail, and parking sometimes fills up quickly, especially on the weekends.
Although Lake Serene Trail is not what you might consider a long route, its 2,798-foot elevation gain and somewhat rocky terrain make it a challenge for even the most seasoned hikers.
About a mile and a half in, there is a cut-off to the Bridal Veil Trail. While this route adds an extra mile for so to the hike, it is definitely worth it. The scenic side trip leads to Bridal Veil Falls, a cascading cliffside waterfall that's too beautiful to miss. It's also a great place to stop for a break.
At last, the trail opens up, revealing towering, snowcapped cliffs and the breathtaking still waters of Lake Serene. This stunning, alpine lake is unquestionably one of the most beautiful places in Washington.
A cool dip in this mountainside swimming hole is a refreshing post-hike reward. However, do keep in mind that the waters of Lake Serene can be quite cold.
For a challenging hike that pays off in spectacular views (and maybe even a dip in an alpine swimming hole), plan a trip to Lake Serene this summer. A Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at the trailhead.
Have you hiked the Lake Serene Trail? Did you go for a refreshing swim? We’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.
