With better weather fast approaching, it’s time to start planning your blue-sky adventures! Top of my list is taking a winery road trip in Washington, and after some very grueling research, I’ve determined that no tasting room tour would be complete without these five Woodinville spots. All that remains is to loop in a couple of friends to join you and that shouldn’t be difficult.
1. Milbrandt Vineyards

Start with the most relaxed on this list: the casual but oh-so-good Milbrandt Vineyards. This Columbia basin-based winery grows its grapes in the Wahluke Slope and Ancient Lakes regions of Central Washington. Their Woodinville tasting room is a great place to get acquainted with their line of quintessentially Northwest wines.

2. DeLille Cellars

One of my closest friends works for DeLille Cellars, so I'll admit to having the inside scoop. This Washington vineyard is the real deal. Not only was DeLille one of the first wineries in our state to receive a five-star rating from the Robert Parker advocacy group, but it's also consistently rated in the Top 100 lists for wineries worldwide. Renowned for its earthy, complex, Bordeaux-style blends, this iconic Evergreen State tasting room is a must-visit.

Is adding Novelty Hill-Januik Winery to our list cheating? Perhaps. You see, this entry is a joint venture from two separate vineyards: Novelty Hill and— you guessed it— Januik. Brought together by acclaimed vintner Mike Januik, this collaboration has produced some of our state's most exciting bottles and there's no better place to taste them than at their chic Woodinville tasting room.
4. JM Cellars

John and Peggy Bigelow launched JM Cellars almost 30 years ago from their family home. Their venture is driven by curiosity, and though their business has grown considerably, they continue to focus on small-batch limited-release wines using techniques John acquires from inspired research, including whole-berry fermenting, foot stomping, and aging wines in clay amphoras. They are, perhaps, my favorite winery on this list, if nothing else, because of their tasting room, which is my idea of perfection.

5. Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery

It veers on dismissive to say that a visit to Chateau Ste. Michelle is obligatory, but that's just the way it is. Perhaps Washington's most iconic wine producer, Chateau Ste. Michelle was built on Seattle lumber baron Frederick Stimson's property in 1912 at the end of Prohibition. The Woodinville location crafts the company's whites, so I recommend tasting these while you're there. Bonus points if you can time your trip to coincide with one of the Chateau's many outdoor concerts!
