Having grown up in Washington, Andrea is a self-admitted Pacific Northwest snob. In their opinion, there's simply nowhere else in the country with the Evergreen State's beauty. After attending university, Andrea devoted themselves to writing full-time. They're thrilled to represent Washington for Only In Your State while pursuing other professional and personal projects. They currently reside in Olympia, where they enjoy leaf-blowing their yard, perfecting homemade ramen, cuddling with their three tiny dogs, and feeding their pufferfish, Sea Biscuit.
True, the majority of Hells Canyon sits in Oregon and Idaho, making this a true Pacific Northwest treasure, but you'll find a sliver of this remarkable area in southeastern Washington.
What you may not know is that Hells Canyon is North America's deepest gorge— deeper than the Grand Canyon— at a stunning depth of almost 8,000 feet. That's the height of nearly seven Empire State buildings! The uniqueness of Hells Canyon attracts almost 35,000 visitors annually, but the vast majority of the crowds will descend on the recreation area in the summer.
Though summer-goers will benefit from snow-free roads, I think Hells Canyon is at its most magnificent in the winter. If you've got the gumption, I highly recommend visiting during the off-season.
Stripped bare for winter, the vibrant bark of native shrubs contrasts brightly against the white snow on the ground. It's also incredibly peaceful; you'll feel like the only hiker there.
If you plan to hike or snowshoe here, remember that all forms of winter recreation are far more energy-intensive than their summertime equivalents. Snowshoeing alone can burn 50 percent more calories!
Alternatively, you can also time your trip to coincide with snowmelt. The ground might be soggy, but seeing the fresh grass newly uncovered is breathtaking.
No matter what time of winter, visiting Hells Canyon during the off-season is an unforgettable experience for Washingtonians with adventure at their heart. While it's possible to only explore the parts of Hells Canyon in the Evergreen State, I highly recommend checking out the swathes of this recreation area in Idaho and Oregon, too.
Are you inspired? Winter doesn’t need to keep Washingtonians cooped up! In a state jam-packed with unparalleled natural beauty, Hells Canyon promises visitors something different. If you’re seeking a winter destination in Washington, this Pacific Northwest gem won’t disappoint. With snowy views, sublime quiet, and thriving wildlife, you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied.
