Having grown up in Washington, Andrea is a self-admitted Pacific Northwest snob. In their opinion, there's simply nowhere else in the country with the Evergreen State's beauty. After attending university, Andrea devoted themselves to writing full-time. They're thrilled to represent Washington for Only In Your State while pursuing other professional and personal projects. They currently reside in Olympia, where they enjoy leaf-blowing their yard, perfecting homemade ramen, cuddling with their three tiny dogs, and feeding their pufferfish, Sea Biscuit.
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
‘Tis the season where Washingtonians wake up in unexpectedly good moods, chat up their baristas with uncharacteristic openness, and greet passersby with unusual enthusiasm. After a long, dark winter, it’s finally spring! If, like me, you’re planning a celebratory getaway, consider booking a stay at one of my favorite waterfront rentals in Washington, this charming Port Orchard cottage.
Managed by veteran host Frances, Chestnut Cottage is a quaint sanctuary nestled on 10 acres atop Harper's Hill. Truly a story-book setting, it's ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers. The minimum booking is for four nights, so plan to spend the week, but the rental's value is excellent at $135 per night.
Perhaps understandably, many Airbnbs have sacrificed personality for function, which is why staying in a home that retains its character is such a treat. Expect fragrant bouquets and consummate homeyness. During my visit, I felt like a character in a Nancy Meyer's film. That's high praise, indeed.
If Chestnut Cottage pays homage to its history (the building dates back to 1905), that's no coincidence. The cabin has remained in the host's family for years and was lovingly decorated by some antique-collecting relatives. You feel their love for the building everywhere, infusing each room with warmth.
Ever heard of red theory? The idea goes that accents of this extraverted color immediately elevate a space. That's certainly true for the adorable kitchen, which is well-equipped for home-cooked meals. Still, if you've got the hankering to venture out, there's some delicious dining nearby.
There's one bed and a pull-out sofa, so if you're traveling in a group, prepare to draw straws. Still, the sofa's comfortable even if it can't quite top the bedroom, where the cheery light could make anyone a morning person.
Though the cottage feels secluded, it's surprisingly close to everything. Port Orchard is worth exploring and there are excellent hikes nearby. Just down the hill is Harper's Pier, which boasts stunning views of the Sound. If you're visiting in spring, forgo a freezing swim for a hike with seasonal wildflowers instead.
If you're looking for a getaway to inaugurate the season, check out Chestnut Cottage. Its interior feels like a welcome home hug and it's the perfect launch pad to enjoy some long-awaited sunshine!
Are you longing for a springtime adventure? Consider booking your stay at one of my favorite waterfront rentals in Washington. Located in the beautiful Port Orchard area, this cottage is close to excellent hikes that will get you and your gear conditioned for more challenging summertime treks.
