Washington State undoubtedly has some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the world. Scenic drives and nature hikes are common pastimes in the Evergreen State, and it’s not hard to see why. If you’re looking for a challenging hike that pays off in spectacular views, we’ve found the perfect place. Just 15 miles from the city of Leavenworth sits Colchuck, a magical lake where the water is a mesmerizing blue.
Colchuck Lake Trail is a 9-mile out-and-back journey with steep elevation gains.
Good quality hiking boots are recommended along with rain gear and a supply of water and snacks. To get to the trailhead, follow US Highway 2 West through Leavenworth. Turn left onto Icicle Road and drive 8.5 miles. Then, take a left at the sign for Colchuck Lake. Follow the dirt road 4 miles to the Stuart Lake trailhead parking area. A Northwest Forest parking pass can be obtained at the trailhead.

The hike begins with a gradual ascent through thickly forested trails.
After about a mile and a half, the trail splits at the junction of Colchuck and Stuart Lake. Although the hike to Stuart Lake is shorter, if you're up for the challenge, continue left on the Colchuck Lake Trail. With rocky switchbacks and an elevation gain of 2,300 feet, hikers will face an extremely strenuous second half of the hike.
Upon final approach, the trail gets increasingly rocky and steep before veering to the right and dropping into a shallow mire. It's here that you'll get a wide-open view of the pristine blue waters of Colchuck Lake.
As soon as you emerge from the tree-lined trail, you can't help but be overwhelmed by the majestic beauty laid out before you.
A magical site awaits beneath the twin spires of Dragontail and Colchuck Peaks. Relax, breathe deep, and take in the beauty around you. You've earned it!
Generally speaking, the Colchuck Lake out-and-back trail takes roughly five hours to complete. But naturally, you'll want to give yourself plenty of time to experience the view, enjoy a picnic, or perhaps even meditate.
Colchuck Lake with its tranquil blue waters is without a doubt one of the most mesmerizing destinations in Washington, perhaps even the world. The best time to hike this trail is May through October. You’ll have to leave the family dog home as pups are not permitted on the trail. Have you visited Colchuck Lake? Were you surprised at how blue the water truly is? Let us know in the comments.
