Perhaps you’ve heard of Thornewood Castle, the “house that love built,” that sits on the shores of American Lake in Lakewood. But if you’ve ever had the privilege of staying there, you know that it’s an experience like no other and something you’ll never forget. Add this place to your travel bucket list, because it’s truly one of the best castles in the US!
Thornewood Castle is located 8601 N Thorne Ln. SW in Lakewood.
Chester bought the 400-year-old Elizabethan manor in England and had it dismantled and shipped, brick by brick, to Lakewood to be included in the building of Thornewood. Construction took three years to complete, from 1908 to 1911. Chester had the castle and gardens built as a gift to his wife, Anna Thorne.

The gardens are incredibly well-maintained, and you'll want to spend a lot of time there (especially in the spring).
As you might expect, rooms and suites here aren't cheap -- the Rose Red Suite costs $297.50 per night, even in the off season. But those who have stayed will tell you it's well worth it.
Lord Byron's Attic features the castle's only heart-shaped tub, so it's perfect for a romantic getaway.
