Everyone knows that you can find some of the best culinary experiences in the world in Washington. This year 23 restaurants in Washington were in the running for a James Beard Award, but they were all from Seattle. While Seattle does get a lot of attention for their great food and drink destinations, we want to tell you about another James Beard Award winning restaurant in central Washington. Los Hernandez is a tiny restaurant that will blow you away with its fresh, flavorful tamales. Find out what makes them so special.
Los Hernandez Tamales in Union Gap, Washington might not look like much from the outside but they've been serving the most delicious tamales in the state since 1990. This family owned establishment is low on frills but high on flavor.
Inside you'll only find a few tables. Walk up to the counter and place your order. It's a great place to go for take out. You can even buy frozen tamales to take and bake at home.
Their menu is simple but spectacular. Choose from pork or chicken tamales with or without rice and beans. Yet, it's their seasonal tamale that has brought them national attention.
Each spring Los Hernandez offers asparagus and pepper jack cheese tamales. Made with local ingredients, these tamales are almost impossible for them to keep in stock.
Each tamale is made by hand. They stuff their husks with freshly made masa, in-season asparagus, and pepper jack cheese. It's a winning combination that the family created on a whim in their home kitchen.
The tamales are so good that Los Hernandez was recognized by the prestigious James Beard Foundation. They're the first restaurant in Washington, outside of Seattle, to win such an award.
