Located on the outskirts of Port Angeles on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula, the 190-acre Salt Creek Recreation Area involves quite a trek for most Washingtonians. However, that gives it a true hidden gem feel — and depending on when you go, you might enjoy plenty of solitude.

Salt Creek Recreation Area & Campground is open year-round, although it's most popular in the summertime.

To reach it, you'll take Highway 112 to Camp Hayden Road and drive for about 3.5 miles, following the signs.
This area was once occupied by Camp Hayden, a World War II military camp built in 1942.

There are still several structures left from the fort, so you'll get a little history lesson before you roam the soft sandy beach area.
This gorgeous park has lush green trails to the beach, along with a host of amenities.
