Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Trail is a beloved state treasure near Vantage, Washington. It’s a loop 2.4-kilometer trail that’s primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips all year round. It’s great for hikers of all levels and accessible to dogs on leashes, making it the ideal family-friendly activity.
The Ginkgo Petrified Forest, where the trail lies, is an intriguing preservation. While there are no trees in sight, the entire forest lies underneath the surface, in a petrified state.
In the 1930s, investigations by geologists and the Civilian Conservation Corps showed that a river of molten lava and ash from volcanic eruptions buried the entire forest. Later on, hundreds of 15.5 million-year-old petrified trees were excavated.
The trailhead lies outside the museum, two miles from the visitor center. It trails around the building, ending at the ancient petroglyphs on display.
The drawings on the rocks date back to the prehistoric Wanapum tribe. They include untranslatable symbols and images of animals and people.
The interpretative trail continues west of the museum. The scenic views here include winding paths and three miles of rolling, windswept hills.
Along the trail, you’ll see 21 petrified specimens on display, though in holes and behind bars to prevent vandalism.
The trail continues up and over hilltops, through a meadow of wildflowers and sagebrush.
The hilltops are the perfect place to see the full expanse of the Ginkgo Petrified Forest. Though it’s mostly barren, the pale green and brown landscape against the blue sky makes a marvelous, contrasting sight.
The hiking trail is quite short but there are many things to do while on the premises.
You can visit the Ginkgo Gem Shop for souvenirs and petrified wood. You won’t miss the huge dinosaur model in front.
Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Trail is a one-of-kind attraction. We recommend that you visit the site when you’re in Washington.
