Having grown up in Washington, Andrea is a self-admitted Pacific Northwest snob. In their opinion, there's simply nowhere else in the country with the Evergreen State's beauty. After attending university, Andrea devoted themselves to writing full-time. They're thrilled to represent Washington for Only In Your State while pursuing other professional and personal projects. They currently reside in Olympia, where they enjoy leaf-blowing their yard, perfecting homemade ramen, cuddling with their three tiny dogs, and feeding their pufferfish, Sea Biscuit.
Though it feels like spring just arrived, summer is around the corner, meaning it’s time to stake out the best outdoor dining in Washington. For a quaint garden experience, I recommend one of my favorites, Poulsbo’s Molly Ward Gardens. Not only is the food here delicious, but its outdoor seating is cute as a button. Whether you’re a local or staying nearby, this gem belongs on your radar.
With its big red barn and tranquil five-acre property, Molly Ward Gardens exudes the passion of owners Sam and Lynn Ward. Washington is jam-packed with divine dining, but it's rare these days to come across a place that feels so personal. The crave-worthy dishes are crafted in the Ward's tiny kitchen. The family named the business after one of their beloved family dogs.
Because it comes from their heart, expect to see the Ward's personality everywhere. Inside, the dining area is eclectic and even a little weird. Still, there's a purity to the project here. A genuine love of hospitality jumps off every dish, and the servers are personable yet knowledgeable. Molly Ward Gardens makes diners feel like old friends, creating an utterly unique guest experience.
Still, it's the courtyard that made me fall in love with this local gem. The bistro-style seating marries al fresco European dining and Nancy Meyer coziness, creating the perfect spot to sip wine with friends on a warm summer afternoon.
The talented kitchen specializes in small, seasonal, organic plates with a New American flair. If the Wards can't find what they need in their own garden, they make every effort to use local suppliers. There's also a fantastic selection of cocktails. Ask your waiter for pairing recommendations, and they'll happily oblige!
Expect that your meal may run a little pricey, but know that the flavor is well worth the price tag. The experience at Molly Ward Gardens is a labor of love, and for your money, you'll enjoy an outing unlike anything else you'll likely find in Washington.
After your meal, take some time to explore the gardens themselves! The property is beautifully kept and bursting with the same care that's made the restaurant such a success.
