We’re lucky to have some of the most gorgeous waterfalls in the country right here in Washington – especially in Mount Rainier National Park. One of the most spectacular cascades you can hike out and see is Comet Falls, and it’s not a very challenging trip at all. The short, scenic trail winds along Van Trump Creek, and features a number of other, smaller cascades all along the way. If you’ve ever Googled “waterfalls in Washington”, or even “waterfalls near me in Washington”, this is the one you’re going to want to put first on your list.

Photos don't even do Comet Falls justice - this towering cascade is by far more awe-inspiring to see in person. At 320 feet high, it's one of the tallest in the park, dropping in three tiers over a basalt rock cliff. It received the name "Comet Falls" because it somewhat resembles the tail of a comet. Plus, its beauty is out of this world. Okay, we'll show ourselves out...

The hike to the falls is fun for the whole family. It spans less than 4 miles round-trip, as it follows Van Trump Creek upstream. The trail kicks off by climbing a steep hill, and then crosses over a sturdy bridge that spans the tumbling creek.

As the trail continues to climb, incredible views of our grandest mountain come into sight. The path begins to level out for a bit, and then crosses the river again over a small log bridge. You'll know you're getting close as soon as you hear the thundering sound of the plummeting falls.

One of the most amazing parts about this hike (other than the glorious falls at the end, of course) is all of the smaller cascades there are to see along the way. Van Trump Creek features many small waterfalls en route to Comet Falls that don't drop nearly as high, but they're all still just as breathtaking.

As you're approaching the falls, the best views can be seen by the end of a series of switchbacks. If you even continue a bit further, you can reach the base of the falls and cool off by the refreshing mist (which feels absolutely amazing on a hot, summer day).

Comet Falls is usually the perfect stopping point for most hikers and families. But, if you're feeling even more adventurous, you can keep on going up to Van Trump Park or Mildred Point.

What are the most amazing natural wonders in Washington? 

Washington State is an outrageously beautiful place. It seems like no matter where you go, you’ll find something beautiful to admire. There are so many things one could consider “wonders” that it’s hard to choose just a few, but some certain things do tend to stand out above and beyond the others as particularly full of wonder. Mount Rainier is one of the more obvious ones, but it shouldn’t be overlooked! It’s a slice of paradise nestled in this beautiful state. Olympic National Park, as well as North Cascades National Park, is known for its otherworldly beauty. You know, you can’t really go wrong with a visit to each of our state and national parks; they truly are something special.  

Where are the most beautiful places in Washington?  

There are bunches of places in Washington that probably qualify. Among our top faves are Cape Flattery, on the stunning Olympic Peninsula. Also on the peninsula is Hurricane Hill, a place favored among landscape photographers for reasons so beautiful you’ll have to see it to believe it. While you’re at it, check out the legendary Hoh Rainforest – also in the area. Another awesome spot is a lesser known (but still fairly popular) one called Perfection Lake.
