For the vast majority of Washington, it has been a snowy winter already. And while that isn’t so great for those with travel plans, it’s wonderful for those of us who love snow sports. Luge sledding is an underrated winter pastime, and you don’t often hear about it here in Washington. But if you pay a visit to the Loup Loup Ski Bowl, you can barrel down Bear Mountain in a luge sled.
Loup Loup Ski Bowl is owned and operated by Loup Loup
Ski Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a lifelong passion for outdoor winter recreation through education.
Located between Twisp and Okanogan on Highway 20, this is a popular winter recreation destination for those who are able to reach it.
Each winter, typically starting in early-mid January, Washingtonians gather to "ski the loup."
Prices vary, but most find the tickets to be more affordable than most other skiing in Washington. Full-time Okanogan County residents get a 10% discount.
But for a different kind of adventure, try the Bear Mountain Luge Experience.
The Loup offers free instructional clinics on how to Luge sled safely, which you'll definitely want to take if you're a beginner. Then, you'll be ready for the luge sled experience itself.
Luge sledding, which is popular in Europe (and an Olympic sport), is definitely different than the sledding you did as a child.
These sleds weigh 50 pounds and can hit speeds of 90 miles per hour. And you steer your luge with your calves.
Needless to say, this takes some getting used to.
But once you've practiced and you're comfortable with it, luge sledding is a total blast.
At The Loup, Luge sledding operates on weekends and holiday weeks throughout the season.
The Bear Mountain Luge Experience is an hour and a half long and costs $160. This includes any sledding instructions you may need, an open-air snowcat ride up Bear Mountain, and guided sledding down a groomed trail. You can add additional sledders to the experience for $40 each.
This winter, try something new on a snowy weekend.
Luge sledding is a one-of-a-kind experience.
