During the cold, wet winter, garden staff work meticulously to prune, weave, and tie the branches to maintain the tunnel effect. What visitors see during the warmer months, then, is a lush tunnel of green. And, during the late spring, a vibrant layer of yellow flowers. Admission is by reservation only, ensuring that this destination never gets too crowded even during busy tourist seasons.
- The Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Salem is one of the smaller gardens in the state at only 22 acres, but it's actually the largest garden dedicated to this family of plants in the world. Many of the plants have been brought in from all around the world, and the reserve is ultimately home to over 700 species of Rhododendrons. There are also some animals here, like ducks and frogs. It's an incredibly peaceful place.
