There are several reasons to plan a road trip to Roanoke, Virginia. First of all, it’s home to several praise-worthy restaurants, shops, and breweries. Plus, you’ll find a treasure trove of natural attractions nearby, one of our favorites of which is Carvins Cove. Yet there’s another, more obscure reason to head to this corner of Virginia: the Mill Mountain Star. This giant light-up star in Roanoke is the only one of its kind in Virginia, and it’s a fascinating attraction you’ll want to experience.
The Mill Mountain Star, also known as the Roanoke Star, is perhaps one of the most stunning outdoor works of art you'll encounter in Virginia's Blue Ridge. You'll find this landmark perched atop Mill Mountain, overlooking the city below.
If you think the star is unique, you're exactly right. In fact, according to Roanoke's tourism website, it's the "largest free-standing, man-made, illuminated star in the world." That's something to be proud of!
The star was constructed in 1949, and it was originally designed to be a seasonal decoration for Christmas. It was first illuminated on November 23, 1949, and continues to shine every night.
The star is also massive in size. It's comprised of 3,000 feet of neon tubing, and as you can see in the photo above, it's actually three concentric stars.
For a fascinating view of the star, you can actually hike up to the top of Mill Mountain and see Roanoke from the star's perspective. It's the perfect place to take a photo of the city.
After you've finished climbing Mill Mountain, be sure to head back down to the city for a great drink or meal out. You'll find there are endless things to do in Roanoke, Virginia.
