I am an avid traveler-- of both the United States and the world. My favorite spots are U.S. national parks, big cities, and anywhere I can practice my French. I have traveled to all but a handful of states and enjoy photographing the beauty I see along the way.
Visitors seeking America’s historic foundations travel in hordes to Washington D.C. proper– and why not, with hundreds of beautiful monuments all in one place? Likewise, folks seeking to spend a fun-filled day in a picturesque locale with plenty of eating and shopping venues often head to the less populated, quaint towns of Virginia. But in doing so, people often miss out on a convenient mix of history and entertainment that is right under their noses. That is the great county of Arlington, Virginia. With patriotic spots like Arlington National Cemetery and the Pentagon, you’ll need an entire day to take them in. You’ll also have a phenomenal choice of places to eat, shop, and have a drink in between your more academic experiences. This combination makes Arlington a commonly overlooked but fantastic destination for a day trip.
Pretty all year, Arlington's modest skyline is spectacular with cherry blossoms.
If you're looking for a pro-tip to avoid the crowded masses that visit D.C. for the cherry blossoms, head to the other side of the basin! Even in peak season, it's not nearly as packed in Arlington, allowing you to photograph the blooms without a 50-person photobomb!
A replica of the Washington Monument rises above the verdant grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, reflecting its model in the panoramic view behind.

It's lovely to meander up and down these sacred hills, with plenty of space for solitary remembrance. The ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is somber but powerful.

Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is a nice spot to have lunch or indulge in a few quality purchases.
Since Arlington is brimming with unique restaurants offering tasty fare, it's hard to choose just one. If you're not in the mood for pizza or the like, the city offers plenty of Asian cuisines as well as seafood and more.
The Pentagon-- our nation's bastion in both symbol and function, sits completely restored from the attack it endured almost two decades ago.
Tours of the Pentagon itself are fascinating but must be scheduled in advance. You can also visit the memorial, just southwest of the building. Take the Metrorail straight there. Otherwise, there is limited space available if you'd like to park your car.
The New District Brewing Company boasts so much variety to tickle the palate that you'll be wise to order a sampler.
There is no shortage of bars and breweries in Arlington. Whether you'd like a cocktail, a glass of vino, or a simple ale, watering holes are abundant and well-stocked.
Make it more than a day. The city's youthful population makes its nightlife a hit.
Even for day-trippers, Arlington is a great place to mingle, have a nightcap, or maybe even a dance. Better yet, so many residents work in the national intelligence sector that you won't have to worry about discussing the office on your downtime-- they're not allowed to!
If you’re looking for a Virginia day trip that is beyond the typical, head to Arlington. It’s a city in its own right and has all the fun and activity that goes along with that. Take advantage of the education on history and government it provides, but have fun doing it! For more awesome Virginia day trips you can take by train, check out our previous article.
