Belle Isle State Park encompasses over 700 acres where visitors can enjoy hiking, kayaking, boating, and appreciating the Northern Neck at its finest. 2. Historic Polegreen Church

The Historic Polegreen Church is a hidden gem both for its beautiful architecture and also for its cultural significance. The church that once stood here was planned in 1748 and completed by 1764. The preacher, Samuel Davis, is remembered for his efforts to teach enslaved people how to read. Although the church was burned down, architect Carlton Abbott installed the frames of this "ghost church" in memory of the civil rights efforts that took place here. 3. Barboursville Ruins

Many people don't think of ruins when they think of Virginia, but it's true that many ruins of historic buildings still exist today. A prime example would be the site of the Barboursville Ruins outside of Charlottesville. Barboursville was once the home of James Barbour, Virginia's governor during the War of 1812. Its eight-room layout and octagonal drawing-room were the ideas of Thomas Jefferson, who designed this grand home. Unfortunately, there was a fire on Christmas Day in 1884, leaving only the ruins you'll find today. You can tour the grounds while also stopping for a taste of wine at Barboursville Vineyards. Carvins Cove can only be described as a magical mountain lake, although it's technically a reservoir. For a fun adventure, you can rent kayaks and paddle along the devastatingly blue water.
