Living in Virginia is reason enough to celebrate. But you’ll feel especially festive upon learning that our very own Charlottesville has been designated as one of the happiest places in the U.S. Tucked away in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlottesville — or C-Ville if you’re a local — has long impressed visitors with its stunning landscape, captivating architecture, food and wine culture, and endless opportunities for adventure. In fact, not only is C-Ville one of the best spring break destinations in the US, it’s also one of America’s happiest towns!
With its quiet, picturesque landscapes and vibrant, bustling community, Charlottesville is easy to love. But don't just take our word for it!
John F. Kennedy once noted that the "natural beauty of the surrounding countryside and the man-made beauty of Charlottesville combine to weave a tapestry of American history few other towns or cities can boast."

As recently as 2017, National Geographic ranked Charlottesville the third-happiest place in America, behind the cities of Boulder, Colorado, and Santa Cruz-Watsonville, California.
So what is it about Charlottesville that makes its residents and visitors so happy? The National Geographic piece points to the lifestyle inspired by the town's beautiful landscape.
And speaking of landscapes, let's talk about those beautiful vineyards. You'll find some of the best wineries in Virginia within a short drive of Charlottesville.
Perhaps one of the most unique vineyards in the area is King Family Vineyards, photographed above. Another equally-impressive spot is Barboursville, which is located near historic ruins.
Visit in the summer and you can spend an adventure-filled day hiking in Shenandoah National Park, driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or taking a float down the river.
Even in the wintertime, the city is postcard-perfect. Photographed below is the famous Downtown Mall, filled with vibrant shops and restaurants that will steal your heart.
So whether you're a nature enthusiast, history buff, or someone that appreciates the culture of a university town, you'll agree that Charlottesville has a way of putting a smile on your face.
