This River Walkway Shows Virginia Like You've Never Seen It Before
Richmond is unlike any city in the country. Virginians may be a bit biased, but there’s really no denying the fact that our capital has an incredible energy, history, and culture. All of these factors are fueled by the river, and it seems fitting that one of the best walks in Richmond runs right across the James. If you’ve yet to venture to the Pipeline Trail, it’s time to plan your visit.

Richmond has a unique blend of the industrial and scenic. A walk along the James River Park Pipeline shows off these characteristics while providing an incredible perspective of the city. This little-known scenic area is essentially a catwalk that traverses a small section of the river, bringing walkers into the heart of the city.

The pipeline can be accessed at the end of South 12th Street, where there’s limited parking available (just seven cars at a time). Climbing down a metal ladder will lead to the pipeline, also known as Trestle Trail that is a true hidden gem of Richmond.

Just beyond the walkway lies a small island where Great Herons are known to congregate. Nowhere else in the city can visitors experience such a close-up of these beautiful creatures nesting and raising their young. You may even be able to see them hunt for fish in the water.

Nearby you’ll notice other kinds of activity, namely the Class III rapids that attract kayakers and rafters alike. This area is also a popular place for picnics, sunbathing, and fishing, especially when the sun is out in full force.

As the water levels vary, so does the accessibility of the pipeline. It’s important to heed caution after major rains, as noted by the warning sign. These rapids are not to be taken lightly!

The pipeline’s existence is purely functional, as it is a part of the James River sewer system. While this may seem something less than beautiful, the pipeline plays an integral part in assuring the cleanliness of the water. No matter what time of day, the pipeline makes for one of the most scenic strolls in the area.
