In the heart of winter, nothing seems more appropriate than dreaming of snow. As residents of Virginia have known for quite some time, snowfall here can be unpredictable at best. Some years, there are blizzards; other years see nothing but a light dusting. Fortunately, there are ways to increase your odds of experiencing a winter wonderland here in Virginia. According to weather.com, the snowiest place in Virginia this winter will be the little town of Wise. If you’ve yet to pass through this charming Appalachian haven, now’s the time.
The town of Wise is tucked away in the scenic mountain region of southwest Virginia. Established in 1874, it’s named for Henry A. Wise, the last of Virginia’s governors before the Civil War began. A beautiful spot to visit anytime of year, Wise is especially picturesque during the winter.
According to officials, Wise is responsible for much of Virginia’s snowfall. Each year, the area accumulates an average of 52.7 inches. While this part of the country is certainly not known for lots of snow, the closeness of the Appalachian mountains makes the difference.
In fact, towns close to these central Appalachian mountains are noteworthy for hosting ski resorts as well as other winter activities. Though none are located in Wise, there’s still a host of activities available. Photographed above is Bear Creek Reservoir, a great spot to watch for wildlife.
As snow accumulates in streets and the surrounding countryside, there’s an undeniable beauty that sets in. Life runs at a slower pace, and that’s exactly what this time of year calls for. Especially beautiful is the campus of University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Snowfall is not always convenient, though, as residents of Wise might attest to. When a heavy dose of snow fell in February of 2015, soldiers from the Cedar Bluff-based Engineer Company delivered food and water to residents who weren’t able to get out of their homes.
If you'd like a place to stay for a night or two, the beautiful Inn at Wise is located in the heart of town and offers breathtaking accommodations. This historic building has been part of town for 100 years and makes for a perfect winter getaway spot.
Even without the snow, this spot is a memorable place to visit. The Appalachian heritage of Wise county gives the town a certain feel of the Old West. This is fitting, as pioneers such as Daniel Boone made their way through the mountains of Wise during their explorations. In this same sentiment, Wise is an important part of the Crooked Road Trail, a route that tells the musical history of this charming site.
