Here in Virginia, we love our trees. Perhaps it’s because Virginia is a notoriously green state, with an abundance of flora to appreciate at any corner. Yet you don’t necessarily have to venture into the wilderness to marvel at the diversity of trees that grow in the Old Dominion. In fact, the State Arboretum of Virginia is a fantastic destination for tree lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. No matter which season you choose to visit, you’ll leave with a newfound appreciation for nature.
Just outside of Berryville, Virginia awaits a breathtaking landmark that remains something of a hidden gem: the State Arboretum of Virginia.
The Orland E. White Arboretum, also known as the State Arboretum of Virginia, is located within the Blandy Experimental Farm and is operated by the University of Virginia.
The arboretum began in 1930 and today contains over 5,000 beautiful trees and shrubs from around the world.
Throughout the 172-acre property, you'll find impressive collections, such as the 300-tree ginkgo grove. During the fall, these trees transform into the most breathtaking hue of gold.
If you're curious to see which plants and trees are native to Virginia, you can take the Native Plant loop trail and admire all sorts of plants, trees, and wildflowers, depending on the season you visit.
Whether you visit for an hour or an entire afternoon, you'll feel grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the importance and fascinating diversity of trees.
Of course, the arboretum isn't all about trees. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the herb garden, perennials, and a wetland pond frequented by all sorts of wildlife.
