Today, we have another bucket-list destination for you to consider: the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway. This 100-mile waterway will lead you past breathtaking scenery and charming small towns while re-invigorating your appreciation for all things wild. The Southern Virginia Wild Blueway is essentially a network of three rivers and two lakes that span Mecklenburg and Halifax Counties, creating a 100-mile navigable route.
The rivers include the Dan River, the Staunton River, and the Banister River, all made up of exquisite scenery. In fact, 80 miles of the river portion are designated as a Virginia Scenic River.
The Virginia Scenic River Program recognizes some of the most beautiful rivers in the state. Paddling along these waters, you'll quickly understand why so much of the Blueway qualifies.

Whether you're relatively new to kayaking or consider yourself a pro, you'll find this area to be absolutely perfect for a day on the water.
There are a few Class I and Class II rapids on the river, but they're not too challenging. The mild current is appropriate for beginners. Of course, you'll want to check the water levels before embarking on your journey.
The lakes included in the Blueway are Kerr Lake (Buggs Island Lake) and Lake Gaston. These lakes offer a combined 1,200 miles of shoreline, most of which are undeveloped and open to the public.
Trips on the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway can be totally customizable, depending on your preference. Spend a peaceful afternoon flat-water kayaking on a lake or take a 3-day excursion along the river, camping along the way.
