There’s no doubt about it: Virginia is a food lover’s paradise. From the mountains to the coast, you’ll find an impressive variety of local cuisine to suit your tastes. And while there may be some friendly dispute over the most iconic local dish in Virginia, Smithfield Ham is definitely a top contender. Here’s more on the history of the most popular local dish in Virginia
One of Virginia's many claims to fame is its creation of the Smithfield ham. In fact, many people are introduced to Virginia via this delicacy, which was born in the town of Smithfield in Isle of Wight County.
The 1926 statute passed by the General Assembly of Virginia reads "Genuine Smithfield hams are those from the peanut-fed hogs, raised in the peanut-belt of the State of Virginia or the State of North Carolina, and which are cured, treated, smoked, and processed in the town of Smithfield, in the State of Virginia." The law has since been updated to allow grains as another acceptable feed.
The curing of Smithfield ham can last anywhere between 6 months and two years, depending on preference.
Of course, there are plenty of other delicious ways to enjoy ham here in Virginia. Whether you prefer the distinct flavor of a Smithfield Ham or a more sandwich-friendly kind, you'll know that you're taking part in a centuries-old tradition.
